The term “extension” (lowercase) refers to one of the three pillars of our land-grant mission — academics, research and extension — focused on translating university knowledge into public service and community education.

“Extension” (capitalized) may also be used as a shortened reference to either NC State Extension (the university’s campus-based unit) or N.C. Cooperative Extension (the statewide partnership operating through county centers). Capitalize Extension only when it refers to one of these formal entities.
